What is a diamond certificate?

What is a diamond certificate and why does it come with your diamond jewellery?

Each diamond has unique properties, and no two diamonds in the world are the same. That's why when you buy a diamond jewellery, you will receive a diamond certificate that defines these unique characteristics. The main characteristics that the diamond certificate will tell you about are the 4Cs: carat, colour, clarity and cut.

The diamond certificate will provide additional information such as the diamond's dimensions, symmetry and unique identification code. This code is engraved on the diamond but it's so small that it cannot be seen with the naked eye. The certificate is issued by an international certificate institute, where the diamond is carefully evaluated under a microscope by two independent persons.

A diamond certificate helps the buyer to make an informed decision and also helps the seller to prove the quality and value of the diamond. The certificate can also help in the valuation of the diamond if it is later resold. All Macor Jewellery diamond rings of 0.50ct and above are supplied with a certificate issued by the IGI.

The largest classification institutes in the world are:

    • IGI, or International Gemological Institute
    • GIA, or Gemological Institute Of America
